Bats

Fluttering creatures of the night

Flying creatures of the night, traditionally associated with the forces of Morgoth and of Sauron. They were most famous in Middle-earth for taking the part of the Goblins during the Battle of Five Armies.

Notes

1	The original Old Norse name for the bat was leðrblaka, 'leather flapper', from which derived Middle English bakke, and hence modern 'bat'. Some sources suggest the name was influenced by Latin blatta (literally 'cockroach', but more broadly interpretable as 'creature of the night').
