Box-woods

An evergreen shrub or tree, often known simply as 'box', with small leathery leaves and dense wood. Box-woods were among the many types of plant-life discovered by Frodo and Sam as they journeyed through the southern land of Ithilien on the borders of Mordor.

Notes

1

The wood of the box-wood tree is durable and remains stable over time, and was historically important as a construction material (it was commonly used to make boxes, as the name suggests, and we also hear of the Rangers of Ithilien using it make bowls, for example). Its original Greek name pyxis was also used for containers or boxes made from the material, a relationship that continues with its English name 'box'. The ultimate origin of the word is uncertain.
