A title given to the Lord of the Nazgûl, most powerful of all the servants of Sauron, who commanded the forces of his master at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Centuries beforehand, it had been prophesied that the Captain of Sauron would not fall to the hand of any man, and at first he drove his enemies before him on the field. After defeating Théoden of Rohan, he encountered a soldier named Dernhelm, who was revealed to be the King's niece Éowyn in disguise. With the aid of the Hobbit Merry Brandybuck she slew the Nazgûl Lord, and the prophecy was proven true: he was slain not by the hand of man, but by the White Lady of Rohan.
