Each of the elder five sons of Fëanor had their own epithet, so Maedhros was 'the tall', Maglor 'the mighty singer' and so on. Following this pattern, Fëanor's fourth son Caranthir was known as 'the dark', and this reflects his earlier name used in Aman which was Morifinwë, 'dark-haired'. Though it was typical for his people the Noldor to have dark hair, in Caranthir's case it was pure black, like that of his grandfather Finwë.
