Elves of Mithrim

First of the Sindar to greet the returned Noldor

A branch of the Sindar of Beleriand who made their way northward over the Mountains of Shadow and into the land of Mithrim around its great central lake. They settled in Mithrim during the long ages of starlight1 before the return of Morgoth to Middle-earth, and of the Noldor who pursued him. It was in Mithrim that the Noldor first encountered others of their own kind after their return, and these were the Elves of Mithrim, across whose land the Noldor fought and defeated the Orcs of Morgoth.

As the Noldor settled in Beleriand and the lands around, Mithrim became part of the holdings of High King Fingolfin. The Elves of Mithrim accepted Fingolfin in friendship, as they also did the Edain who later dwelt in their land in service to the High King.

After the disaster of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the Eldar lost Mithrim to Morgoth, and the Dark Lord gave the region into the power of his cruel Easterling allies. These Easterlings feared and hated the Elves, and from this time the Elves of Mithrim were forced into hiding, or into a desperate flight to find safer lands beyond the mountains of their home.

Notes

1

We don't know exactly how long the Elves of Mithrim had lived apart from their fellow Sindar south of the Mountains of Shadow, but it was clearly some considerable time. We have a reference to them developing their own unique branch of the Sindarin language (known as North Sindarin) which implies that they had lived in Mithrim for at least several centuries before the Noldor made the crossing back into Middle-earth.
