Ford of Rivendell

The crossing of the Bruinen

Map of the Ford of Rivendell

A wide stretch of the River Bruinen that lay not far downriver from its sources in the Misty Mountains. This rocky stretch caused the river to run in a noisy foam, but was shallow enough to be forded. The Ford marked the entrance into the lands controlled by Elrond, the Lord of Rivendell, and its waters were under his power. He used that power when the Nazgûl made their final attempt to capture the Ring-bearer, raising the waters of the Ford into an immense flood that washed the Black Riders away.
