Bregalad was an Ent of Fangorn with a special affinity for the trees known as rowan or mountain ash (and indeed his English name 'Quickbeam' derives from an old name for trees of that kind). These mountain-dwelling trees at one time grew in profusion in the heights where the Misty Mountains descended into Fangorn Forest, but the Orcs of Isengard felled many of them with their cruel axes. The fury of the Ent over the loss of his beloved rowans played a part in the ultimate downfall of Saruman, causing Bregalad to quickly choose to join an attack on Isengard even before the other Ents had reached their decision to go to war.
In mourning the loss of the rowan trees, Bregalad gave them many names in the Quenya tongue. Among these was lassemista, a name that translates as 'leaf-grey' (where the 'grey' apparently describes the grey bark of the mountain ash). Bregalad also gave the rowans two other Elvish names: orofarnë and carnimírië (which meant 'mountain-dwelling' and 'red-jewelled', in reference to their scarlet berries).
