Man of Craft

An intepretation of the name Curunír

When the Wizards came to Middle-earth in about the year III 1000, they acquired names in the tongues of the Elves and Men that encountered them. The eldest of these Wizards, and the leader of their Order, became famous for his knowledge and skill, and among the Elves this reputation gained him the name Curunír, variously interpreted as 'Man of Skill' or 'Man of Craft'. His name among Men came from a similar root, but in the tongue of the Northmen it translated as searu man, giving rise to his more familiar name of 'Saruman'.
