Moss

Matted growths of forest and swamp

A low-lying green plant that forms broad spongy mats, especially in damp locations or places deep with shade. Moss was found throughout Middle-earth, but especially around marshland or within the depths of dark forests. It was known to be found around the fringes of the Dead Marshes, and was especially associated with the older remnants of the vast ancient forest that ran from the Old Forest in the north to Fangorn Forest in the south. In Fangorn, indeed, it grew on the Ents themselves, and the beards of Treebeard and his fellow Ents were formed from mossy growths.
