Sage

A broad name for many different types of related plants, some of which can be used as a herb or for medicinal purposes. Sage evidently grew far and wide in Middle-earth, and was found at least as far north as the eastern foothills of the Misty Mountains beneath the High Pass. Far to the south in Ithilien, Frodo and Sam found many different varieties of the plant, flowering blue, red and pale green. Sam even attempted to send Gollum to collect some for use in cooking.

Notes

1

The Old English name salvie comes ultimately from Latin salvus, 'healthy', because this herb was thought to possess medicinal properties, and this origin is preserved in the Latin generic name for sage, Salvia. It was common for the Hobbits to name their girl-children after flowers, and this Latin name for sage is the source of the Hobbit-name Salvia Brandybuck.
