The Seven Gates of Gondolin

The second of the Seven Gates that barred the Orfalch Echor, the ravine that led through the Encircling Mountains to the Hidden City of Gondolin. The Second Gate consisted of a single dark and polished block of stone set in a stone wall that spanned the ravine. That block was set on a central pivot, and it opened by turning on this pivot to allow passage on either side. Behind the Second Gate was a courtyard guarded by many grey-clad Elves, and over the courtyard, in the wall that held the gate stood two towers, one to the north and one to the south.
