The approximate location of Utumno (speculative)1
Also called Udûn (for example in Gandalf's words on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm), Utumno was the ancient northern fortress of Melkor, delved in the time of the Lamps of the Valar. It was reduced to ruins when the Valar made war on him at the time of the awakening of the Elves.

The general geography of this map is based on early sketch-maps of the world reproduced in volume IV of The History of Middle-earth. However, even those old maps do not specifically mark the location of Utumno, so the position shown here is necessarily highly speculative. We know from textual references that it lay northward of Ered Engrin, the Iron Mountains, and far to the east from Angband (which at this time was part of Utumno's outer defences). It therefore lay somewhere within the general region shown here, but its exact location remains in the realms of conjecture.
