Arciryas' father was King Telumehtar Umbardacil, the twenty-eighth ruler of Gondor. Telumehtar was succeeded by Arciryas' elder brother, who became King Narmacil II, but history would prove Arciryas' own line to be important in its own right. His great-grandson, Eärnil, became an important general in Gondor's armies. After a disastrous battle left the land without a King or an heir, it was Eärnil's descent from Arciryas (and hence the royal line) that led the Council to grant him the Kingship.

We have no dates for Arciryas, but we know that his elder brother Narmacil (later King Narmacil II) was born in the year III 1684. Arciryas must therefore have been born after that date, probably within just a few years.

The name Arciryas is not explained, but the initial Ar- relates to royalty or nobility (appropriately for a son of the King of Gondor). The cirya element has various possible meanings, but in context is probably 'ship', so Arciryas would be something like 'noble seaman'. Indeed, it is conceivable that Arciryas was the Elvish equivalent of the title 'Captain of Ships' traditionally held by the admiral of Gondor's navies.
