Chithing

A month in the calendar of Bree

Months of the year

The fourth month in the old calendar of Bree, corresponding to Astron on the Shire Calendar, or Viressë in the Quenya month names commonly used in Middle-earth. The name of this month is probably related to Old English ciþ, 'a plant shoot', reflecting its status as part of spring.

Notes

1

In the original Old English form of this word, cīþing, the first i is marked as long with a macron (that is, the accent mark on the ī). So, strictly following Anglo-Saxon conventions, the pronunciation would be something like 'chee'thing'. However, the modernised spelling 'Chithing' is not marked as having a long vowel, so the more natural pronunciation (to rhyme with 'tithing' or 'scything') is probably the intended pronunciation.
