The perilous cleft of Cirith Thoronath (somewhat conjectural)1
A narrow and treacherous pass that led through the Encircling Mountains to the north of Gondolin. A narrow path led through the pass along a dangerous ledge, with a deep chasm on its western side and a sheer cliff face to the east. It was through this pass that the Exiles of Gondolin fled from the fall of their city, but found themselves confronted by a force of Morgoth's creatures, including a Balrog. Glorfindel fought with the Balrog, and both fell into the depths and were destroyed. Meanwhile Thorondor and his Eagles drove off the Orcs, allowing the remaining Exiles - including the young Eärendil - to make their escape.

While the landscape around Gondolin is mapped in a certain amount of detail, the exact course of Cirith Thoronath through the Encircling Mountains is not shown on any map. We know that it ran through the mountains to the north of Gondolin, but the detail of the route shown here is necessarily conjectural.
