The blackened and lifeless region that lay around the Lonely Mountain, created by the Dragon Smaug after his capture of the Dwarf-city there. Smaug had spread fire and destruction around the mountain, and no living thing grew within the Desolation. After Smaug was slain and Erebor recovered, Dwarves and Men worked together to repair the Desolation. By the time of the War of the Ring, some eight decades after Smaug's defeat, the Desolation no longer existed, and the town of Dale had been fully rebuilt.
