It was in the nature of Dragons - at least those that are described in detail - that they emitted a foul vapour known variously as Dragon-stench, Dragon-reek or Wormstench. This vapour not only stank hideously, but also instilled a sense of terror and dread in all who inhaled it.
The Dragon-stench of Glaurung was particularly potent, driving all who encountered him to a frenzy of madness. When Glaurung approached the concealed Túrin in Brethil, the stench of his approach nearly caused Túrin to lose his precarious hold and fall from his hiding place. Smaug, too, created his own Dragon-stench. The halls of Erebor became filled with it, though it does not seem to have been so overpowering as that produced by Glaurung.
