Drúnos

A family of the Drúedain

An Elvish word used among the people of Beleriand, referring to a family of the strange woodland people known as the Drúedain (or later as Woses). This is a compound word, derived from the element Drú-, which distinguished the race of the Drúedain from the more familiar Edain, combined with the Sindarin noss, meaning an extended family or clan.

Notes

1

Drû is a prefix referring here to the people collectively known as the Drúedain or Wild Men, so Drunos was understood to mean a 'family of the Drúedain'. The word drû originally meant 'wild', so the literal translation of Drunos would be 'wild family'.
