When the Edain sailed westward at the beginning of the Second Age, they followed the Star of Eärendil to find their new home, a great island provided for them by the Valar. This island became known by many names, most famously Númenor or Westernesse, but another of its names was Quenya Elenna, meaning 'Starwards', in reference to the guiding star that brought the Edain there. Elenna·nórë is a fuller form of this name, indicating 'starward land' or 'Land of the Star', and thus referring specifically to the realm of Númenor, rather than simply the island on which it was based.
