A fountain that rose from the green plain of Tumladen surrounding the Hidden City of Gondolin. Known in Elvish as Eithel Nínui, the fountain of tears, legend said that it had sprung from the tears of Lúthien Tinúviel as she wept for the wounded Beren. During their escape from Angband, Beren had lost his hand to Carcharoth the Wolf, and come close to death, but the pair were rescued by Thorondor and his Eagles. The Eagles carried them southwards over the concealed plain of Tumladen, and as they flew far above, Lúthien's tears fell onto the ground below. Where those tears fell, it was said, the Fountain of Tinúviel sprang into being.
