Guard of Faramir

The White Company of Emyn Arnen

A company of the soldiers of Gondor assigned as the household guard of Faramir at the time he was made Prince of Ithilien by the new King Elessar. They were otherwise known as the White Company, a name that presumably derives from the white standard that Faramir bore as Steward of the King. The guard were posted among the hills of Emyn Arnen, the seat of the Prince of Ithilien, and their first captain was Beregond, who had saved the life of Faramir during the madness of his father Denethor II.

Notes

1

By definition, the named Guard of Faramir would only have served as long as Faramir himself was Prince of Ithilien. As the White Company, they would presumably have gone on to serve Faramir's heirs, taking their names in turn. Faramir's direct heir is not canonically named, but one source (in volume XII of The History of Middle-earth) suggests that he may have been called Elboron. If so, then in the year IV 82, the Guard of Faramir would have become the Guard of Elboron, and so on through the generations of their descendants.
