Herefara

One of the fallen of Rohan

A leader among the Riders of Rohan, who brought the Rohirrim under his command to the Muster of Rohan, and followed Théoden from Dunharrow to the Pelennor Fields before Minas Tirith. He fought and fell in the fateful battle there, and his name was recorded among the lords and commanders of Rohan in the Song of the Mounds of Mundburg. The meaning of his name is not certain, but it seems to mean 'one who goes to war'.

Notes

1

Herefara's name combines two Old English words. Here- means 'army' or 'host', and the same word is used in éoherë, 'horse-host', the name for the massed cavalry of Rohan. Meanwhile -fara means 'traveller', and is equivalent to the old word 'farer', seen for example in 'wayfarer'. This combination literally meant 'one who travels with an army' or 'one who goes to war', but as a personal name it could be interpreted simply as 'warrior' or 'soldier'.
