The Nirnaeth Arnoediad was the greatest of the battles of the Wars of Beleriand, and left the great dusty northern plain of Anfauglith littered with the bodies of the fallen. Morgoth sent out his Orcs to gather their remains and their gear, and from them build a Great Mound in the middle of the parched land. The result was a mound as great as a hill; among the names given to it by the Elves was Haudh-en-Nirnaeth. That term is fully translated as the 'Hill of Tears', but the word Nirnaeth also connects it back to the battle of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, 'Unnumbered Tears'.
It was said that the Hill of Tears was the only place in the vast dusty plain of Anfauglith where grass would grow, and over time it became a green hill standing alone in the desert, a memorial to the slain of the last great battle of the Eldar against Morgoth.
