One of the many names among the Elves for the race of Men. Its meaning is never explicitly explored, but it seems clear that the Eldar found it difficult in some sense to understand the motivations or modes of thought of the Mortal Second People. The choice of the name may seem curious, given that the High Elves, at least, had some capacity to read the minds of Men.1 Even with such a facility, however, it seems that there was much about Men that the Elves found impenetrable.
