A title given to an official scribe or record-keeper to the King of Gondor. This was the position held by Findegil, who completed a copy of the Red Book of Westmarch in IV 172 and inscribed it with his name and title. This is the only reference we have to the title 'King's Writer', so it is impossible to be sure how far back in history the position goes. We do know that royal records were preserved even in the earliest days of Númenor, more than six thousand years before Findegil's time, where the Scroll of Kings was an important document. Whether the keepers of this Scroll were Findegil's official predecessors as King's Writer, however, remains in the realms of speculation.
