Maid of Tears

The name of Niënor in Brethil

While Túrin was dwelling in the Forest of Brethil, he discovered a strange woman on the borders of that land. Unknown to him, this was Niënor, his own sister, whose memory had been taken by Glaurung the Dragon. As she did not know her name, Túrin chose one for her: imagining that her history had been a sad one, he named her Níniel, Maid of Tears. Her past had indeed been a sad one, but her future would be sadder still: after unknowingly marrying Túrin her brother, the Maid of Tears would cast herself to her death in the roaring waters of the river Teiglin.
