Noldor of Gondolin

Those who followed Turgon into Middle-earth

When the Noldor returned to Middle-earth and settled in Beleriand, for the most part they dwelt separately from the native Sindar, keeping themselves to unpeopled lands. An exception to this was Turgon son of Fingolfin. He built a new city, Vinyamar, on the peninsula of Taras-ness on the coasts of Nevrast, where many of the Sindar were already to be found. Those Grey-elves accepted Turgon as their lord, and when he departed from Nevrast for the Hidden City of Gondolin, those Sindar joined themselves to Turgon's Noldor and left their homeland for the new city.

If there were any tensions between the Noldor and the Sindar of Gondolin they are not made explicit, and in general it seems that the two peoples lived together in harmony. Nonetheless there do seem to have been distinctions, at least in war. In the account of Turgon at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, we find his forces referred to not as the 'armies of Gondolin', but specifically as the 'Noldor of Gondolin'.1 It's not clear what we're to make of this, but it does seem that at least the elite forces of Gondolin were entirely comprised of the Noldor.
