The approximate location of Ost-in-Edhil in
Eregion1
The chief city of Eregion, the great Elvish nation of the mid-Second Age. It was here that the House of the Mírdain stood, and here too that the Rings of Power were forged by Celebrimbor and the Mírdain. The city stood for nearly a thousand years, but was ravaged by Sauron during his invasion of Eriador.

The precise location of Ost-in-Edhil remains in the realms of speculation, though we can make some informed guesses. We know that it lay westward of Khazad-dûm, and that a road ran from the West-gate of that Dwarf-city to Ost-in-Edhil. We also know that the road ran along the stream of the Sirannon for at least several miles westward of Khazad-dûm. Though we cannot be certain, it seems most plausible that the road continued along the Sirannon's course and that Ost-in-Edhil was to be found farther downstream, either on the Sirannon itself, or possibly on the river Glanduin into which the stream flowed.
