A title given to King Théoden of Rohan by Aragorn Elessar. Aragorn gave the King this title after his death in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and it was presumably Théoden's heroic actions in leading his Riders to that battle that accounted for the renown he was given in Minas Tirith. Aragorn's use of the title perhaps reflects that of Théoden's father Thengel, who was named as Thengel the Thrice-renowned. At that time, Théoden had been laid to rest in the Hallows, among the City's Kings and Stewards, though his body would later be carried back to Rohan and buried beside his ancestors in the Barrowfield of Edoras.
Théoden of Rohan was the only individual to be formally titled as the Renowned, but one other character came close. Months before the King's death, Frodo Baggins encountered the Dwarf Glóin in Rivendell, and Glóin spoke of his former companion Bilbo Baggins as 'our friend Bilbo the renowned' (The Fellowship of the Ring II 1, Many Meetings). This seems to be more of a simple description rather than any kind of formal title but, at least in some sense, Bilbo could be said to have shared Théoden's honorific.
