Brightly coloured flowers that typically grow on dense bushes with thorny stems. In Middle-earth the sweet-smelling roses of Imloth Melui were famed in Gondor, but they clearly also grew far and wide beyond the borders of South-kingdom. They were known at least as far north as the Shire, where 'Rose' was one of the flower-names common among the Hobbits (as was 'Eglantine', which is also a variety of rose).
