After Aredhel wandered from Gondolin, she was taken as wife by Eöl the Dark Elf, who dwelt in the shadowy darkness beneath the trees of Nan Elmoth. There Aredhel gave birth to a son, whom she named Lómion, 'Child of the Twilight'. Eöl did not name his son until twelve years later, when he chose a name that reflected Lómion's piercing and insightful gaze: Maeglin or Sharp Glance.
It is by the name Maeglin that Eöl's son is most commonly referred to in histories, though his story was not a happy one. After fleeing Nan Elmoth with Aredhel, he watched both his mother and father die, and Maeglin would eventually betray Gondolin to Morgoth and bring about its Fall. During the destruction of the city he attempted to abduct the King's daughter Idril, but was slain by Tuor.
