Nan Elmoth

The forest on the banks of the River Celon

Map of Nan Elmoth

The dark and ancient woods on the banks of the River Celon in East Beleriand. It was here that Thingol first came upon Melian, and many years later the forest became the home of Eöl the Dark Elf.

Notes

1

Near the middle of the forest was a small lake (named Gladuial in volume XI of The History of Middle-earth) by which Eöl had his house. It was from this pool that the entire wood seems to have taken its name.

In his linguistic appendix to The Silmarillion, Christopher Tolkien suggests that the element -moth can be interpreted as 'dusk', but this does not appear to apply to the name 'Nan Elmoth'.
