The magical western entrance to Khazad-dûm, made by the Dwarf Narvi at some point in the Second Age, and traced with designs created by Celebrimbor himself. The doors were set in the base of a great cliff, and on either side stood a huge holly tree (holly was the emblem of Eregion, and the door marked the eastern edge of that realm). Created as a gate between two neighbouring and friendly lands, the doors were designed to work through simple magic: speaking the word mellon ('friend') would unbind the spells that held them shut.
