A term for the Elves, and especially the High Elves, used among mortals. The particular form 'Wise People' was used by the Hobbit Peregrin Took when addressing Gildor and his companions when they met in the hills of the Shire. Though Pippin was presumably unaware of the fact, the use of the title 'Wise' for the Elves in fact dated back into the early history of mortal kind. When Men first encountered the Eldar of Beleriand in the First Age, they came across the Elf-king Finrod in the valleys of the Blue Mountains. Finrod aided and taught these people - the followers of Bëor - and in return they named the Elf Nóm, 'wisdom', and his people they called Nómin or 'Wise People'.
