Worm of Dread

A poetic title of Smaug

"The Worm of Dread is slain and dead,
And ever so our foes shall fall!
"
From the song of the Dwarves in Erebor
The Hobbit 15
The Gathering of the Clouds

A title given to the Dragon Smaug by the Dwarves of Thorin's Company, using 'Worm' in its older sense of 'Serpent' or 'Dragon'. At this point in their adventures, news had reached them that Smaug had been slain,1 but that the Men of the Lake and the Elves of the Wood were converging on Erebor. At this news the Dwarves fortified the Lonely Mountain, and as the armies of Men and Elves encamped in the valley of Dale between the mountain's arms, the Dwarves sang of Smaug's fall to build their courage for the troubles ahead.

Notes

1

Smaug was slain far from the Mountain by Bard the Bowman, rather than by the Dwarves themselves, despite the triumphalism of their song.
