The Wronged

The meaning of Túrin’s alias Neithan

After the accidental death of Saeros at his hands, Tûrin fled the land of Doriath where he had been brought up, and lived for a time among a band of outlaws beyond its western borders. Though Túrin had merely defended himself against Saeros, he considered himself banished from Doriath for slaying the Elf. Túrin therefore took a new name among the outlaws, Neithan, meaning 'The Wronged'.

Notes

1

Túrin chose the name Neithan, the Wronged, when he first encountered the outlaws of the Gaurwaith in I 484 (when he would have been twenty years old). We're told that he continued to use the name throughout the time that the outlaws knew him, which would equate to the next five years until the band's destruction in I 489.
