Dagnir

One of Barahir’s final twelve companions

The outlaws of Ladros

A follower of Barahir, who remained faithful to his lord when Dorthonion was overrun by Morgoth in the Dagor Bragollach. Barahir and his last twelve companions were pursued by no less a hunter than Sauron, and at last their camp at Tarn Aeluin was betrayed. Nearly all of Barahir's band, including Dagnir and Barahir himself, were slain when the camp was attacked.

Notes

1

Dagnir's name comes from the Elvish root dag- 'slay'. This is the same word as appears in Túrin's title of Dagnir Glaurunga, which is translated as 'Bane of Glaurung', but might be rendered as 'slayer of Glaurung'. 'Slayer' might, incidentally, seem rather an unlikely choice of a birth-name, so perhaps we're to take it that Dagnir acquired this name as a later epithet during his time as a desperate outlaw in Ladros.
