A common title used in the First Age for Glaurung, the Gold-worm of Angband. Glaurung was the first of Morgoth's Dragons to emerge, and for many years the only one to be known to the peoples of Beleriand. Glaurung had been seen several times by the Elves and Edain, and he fought in the Dagor Bragollach and the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. After healing his wounds from the Nirnaeth, he was sent out against Nargothrond by his Master in the North. Sacking that fortress, he established himself as a Dragon-King, and it is at this period that he is most commonly referred to simply as 'the Dragon'. At last he left Nargothrond, and travelled north and east to assail Brethil. There at last he met his bane in the shape of Túrin and his Black Sword, and so the first and most famous of the Dragons came to his end.
