During the Elder Days, Lindon was a narrow inland region marginal to the great Wars of Beleriand that raged beyond the river Gelion to the west. After the War of Wrath that brought the First Age to an end, the seas rushed in across the lands of Beleriand, leaving Lindon the only substantial area of land westward of the Blue Mountains. The Eldar of the western lands therefore withdrew here from their drowned realms and, though many then took ship across the Great Sea into the West, many others of the Eldar remained. These survivors founded a new kingdom in the narrow land of Lindon.
Through the Second Age, Lindon was ruled by Ereinion Gil-galad son of Fingon, last of the High Kings of the Noldor. With him at first were Círdan and Elrond, but at the time of the fall of Eregion, Gil-galad sent Elrond eastward to found a refuge in Eriador, a refuge that would become known as Rivendell.
Lindon lost its last king in the War of the Last Alliance that brought the Second Age to an end, where Gil-galad was overthrown by Sauron before the Dark Lord was himself defeated. After this Círdan took up the effective rule of that land, maintaining the Grey Havens of Mithlond on the shores of the Sea. From there the remaining Eldar of Middle-earth sailed westward as the Age passed on towards its end in the great conflict of the War of the Ring.
