Isembard Took

The seventh child of the Old Took

The seventh of the twelve children of Gerontius, the Old Took. Though he was far from inheriting the Thainship, Isembard founded a branch of the Took family that continued down at least to the time of the War of the Ring. Many of his descendants were present at Bilbo's Farewell Party, including his grandson Adelard, and Adelard's own five children.

Notes

1

The intended pronunciation of Isembard is unclear. The isem element comes from a Germanic word for 'iron', and so we might expect the name to begin with a long i sound (as in German eisen). However, the similar name Isambard (best known as the given name of the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel) is pronounced with a short 'i', and this would seem to be the most natural way to pronounce the Hobbit-name Isembard.
