MitheThe outflow of the Shirebourn![]() The place, a little south of the southern point of Buckland, where the River Shirebourn flowed into the Brandywine. The Overbourn Marshes ran southward from here, but on the northern side of the confluence a landing had been made for watercraft. From here the Mithe Steps led up to a lane that carried on to the nearby village of Deephallow. Mithe and its Steps were visited by Tom Bombadil, who sailed down the Withywindle to moor here before passing northwards up the Causeway to meet Farmer Maggot. Though we only know about one such visit for sure (from a reference in the poem "Bombadil Goes Boating") Tom's evident familiarity with the Shire and with Farmer Maggot suggest that he made this trip with some regularity.
