Eorl was the ruler of the Éothéod in the North of Middle-earth. In III 2510 he received a desperate embassy from Steward Cirion, calling on old alliances to seek Eorl's aid against an imminent invasion of Gondor. Eorl agreed, and gathered his people to make the famous Ride of Eorl, from the sources of Anduin down through its Vales as far as the Undeeps, a journey of some five hundred miles. At its end, the Riders of the North - Eorl's Men of the Éothéod - surprised the invading Balchoth and relieved the beleaguered army of Gondor, saving the South-kingdom from disaster.
The Riders of the North were rewarded for their valour with the wide green land of Calenardhon. After their settlement there, that region became known as Rohan, and so the Riders of the North became the first of the Riders of Rohan.
