The name 'Roper' started out as a simple occupational title for Hob Gammidge, but by the time of his grandson Andwise it had evolved to become a family name.
A branch of the family descended from Hamfast of Gamwich, associated with the village of Tighfield in the Shire. The name 'Roper' developed from a family tradition apparently started by the grandson of Hamfast, Hob Gammidge, and continued by his son, Hobson, who was also known as Roper Gamgee. 'Roper' first came to be used as a family name in the next generation: Hobson's own eldest son was known as Andwise Roper (the 'Uncle Andy' that Sam refers to occasionally in The Lord of the Rings). Andwise had a son in turn, Anson, but (though he was a member of the Roper family) it is unclear whether he continued the rope-making tradition of his forebears.
