A general term used in Bree for those visitors passing northward up the Greenway from the south. It is used especially for one suspicious character, known only as the 'squint-eyed Southerner' (The Fellowship of the Ring I 9) with nefarious aims. His origins and goals are not entirely clear: The Lord of the Rings itself suggests that he had some Goblin ancestry and was working as a spy for Saruman, but other sources imply that he was a Dunlending, and perhaps even under the influence of the Nazgûl.
