The second of the six rushing rivers that ran down from the Blue Mountains to meet the great River Gelion. The Thalos, whose name comes from the Elvish for 'torrent', is important in the history of Men. It was in the high valley of its upper course that Bëor and his followers, the first Men to cross the mountains, made their camp, and where they were discovered by Finrod Felagund.
Notes
1 |
This river's name ultimately derives from thall, meaning 'steep', applied to a river that falls steeply along its course. From this came the word thalos, 'torrent', which came to be applied to this river of Ossiriand as its proper name.
