Black Rider

The Lord of the Nazgûl at the Siege of Gondor

'Black Riders' was a common term used of the Nazgûl while they rode their black horses, especially during the time they chased Frodo and his companions from the Shire to the Ford of Bruinen. The name also appears in a singular form, and as 'the Black Rider' it has special applicability to the Witch-king, Lord of the Nazgûl. In his role as Black Captain at the Battle of the Pelennor, he abandoned his flying mount for a time and commanded his army from horseback. At this time he was known as the Black Rider, even after he returned to the skies, until his final destruction by Éowyn in the midst of the Battle.
