Notes

1

After the land of Dor-lómin was taken by Morgoth, Gorlim fell in with Barahir's Men at Tarn Aeluin, but we're told that he was return to visit his old home at times. If Gorlim could visit his old home relatively regularly, it would seem that it must have stood relatively close to Tarn Aeluin - perhaps a few days travel at the most. This seems to imply that Gorlim's house was somewhere in Ladros in the northeastern part of Dor-lómin, which was indeed the part of the land where the Men of Dor-lómin chiefly dwelt.

2

Gorlim's name is not explained, and does not have an obvious derivation from an Elvish source (except perhaps for a connection to gor, meaning 'horror' or 'dread'). We might therefore take it that the name came from the little-known language of the Bëorians. Gorlim is commonly referred to as 'Gorlim the Unhappy', so we might conceivably take 'unhappy' as an interpretation of the name, though this is hardly definitive.
