Destroyed at the end of the
First Age
The lands northward of
Beleriand, most notably
Dor-lómin, but also incorporating (from west to east)
Nevrast,
Mithrim and greater
Hithlum, and
Dorthonion; northward beyond these lands lay the plain of
Ard-galen (later
Anfauglith) and then
Dor Daedeloth surrounding
Morgoth's stronghold of
Angband
These lands were formally under the power of the
Elves, but both
Dor-lómin and
Dorthonion were held in later times as fiefs by
Men
Most of the lands of the North were separated from
Beleriand by mountain ranges, notably
Ered Wethrin, the
Mountains of Shadow, and
Ered Gorgoroth, the
Mountains of Terror
The
Pass of Sirion divided the two great highland regions of the North
The peoples of
Beleriand used 'the North' in two different ways, and this entry refers to its use for northern lands held by allies, especially
Dor-lómin; sometimes, however, '
the North' could be be used of the more distant northern region held by
Morgoth and his servants, and for that latter usage see the alternative entry for
The North.
